🤥 People Are More Likely to Cheat When Using AI Than When Solving Tasks Themselves
AI makes it easier to break the moral rules that usually keep us honest, according to a new experiment from German researchers.
Volunteers received payment based on the number they rolled on a die: the higher the roll, the larger the payout. The researchers simply took their word for it—if someone rolled a "1" but claimed it was a "6," they still received six times the payout.
Participants were divided into groups: some reported the numbers themselves, while others allowed an AI to report the results, providing only instructions on how to respond. The more decision-making was handed over to AI, the higher the cheating rate became:
1️⃣ People who reported results themselves were honest about 95% of the time.
2️⃣ When people gave the AI specific instructions (like "if it's a 2, report a 5"), honesty dropped to around 75%.
3️⃣ When participants just set a general goal for the AI (from "maximize accuracy" to "maximize profit"), most chose profit, and honesty collapsed to just 12–16%.
❔ Why Does This Happen?
Researchers believe that delegating decisions lowers personal responsibility, so people don't feel guilty about cheating. And it doesn't matter that, unlike another person who might refuse to go along, AI just blindly follows instructions.
