⏰ AI Creates New Languages
Creating a language from scratch used to be a task only expert linguists could handle. Some artificial languages, like Tolkien's Elvish or Klingon from Star Trek, even gained popularity among fans of those universes. Now, artificial intelligence can do it too.
Researchers from Sakana AI and the University of Notre Dame have introduced a system called IASC (Interactive Agentic System for ConLangs)—a tool that allows users to step-by-step construct an artificial language using LLMs.
First, the model creates a phonetic system—deciding which sounds will exist and how they should combine. Then it develops grammar, word order, and types of inflection. Next comes the writing system, and finally, the model generates a mini-language guide with examples and translations.
The model can even handle abstract linguistic concepts (like "inclusive we"). Still, it struggles with rare phenomena such as non-standard word orders (as in Basque).
❔ Why Is This Useful?
This tool makes it easy to create languages for games, books, or movies. Additionally, it helps researchers better understand what AI truly knows about language—where it grasps abstract concepts and where it's simply reproducing statistical patterns.
