🚘 A Road That Charges EVs Just Opened in France

The wireless charging system, developed by Israeli company Electreon, is being tested on a 1.5 km section of the A10 highway, about 40 km from Paris.

Inductive coils, similar to those used in wireless phone chargers, are embedded beneath the asphalt. When an EV equipped with a receiver drives over them, the coils generate a magnetic field that powers the vehicle's battery.

The system delivers over 300 kW at peak and averages more than 200 kW—comparable to DC fast chargers.

In the coming months, the team will collect data on the system's performance. If the pilot is successful, the technology could be rolled out across other parts of the EU.

🔋 Why It Matters

With this kind of infrastructure, EVs wouldn't need to charge as often and could use smaller batteries. That means lighter vehicles, more cargo space, and less demand for expensive materials like lithium and cobalt.

France isn't the first country to explore this technology, but most past tests have been limited to short, low-traffic roads. In November 2023, Detroit launched a 400-meter test section. In Tel Aviv, Electreon has already installed similar wireless charging lanes for electric buses.
