🏆 The Gap Between Open and Closed AI Models Is Shrinking

According to Epoch AI, open-weight models now take an average of 3.5 months to reach the performance level of leading closed systems developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. A year ago, that gap was about 12 months.

The gap between today's best open-source models and top closed-source models is comparable to the difference between flagship models like GPT-5 or Gemini 2.5 Pro and their lighter mini/flash versions.
