👩🏫 A Mom Created an AI Tutor for Her Son with Dyslexia
At the age of 11, Toby was diagnosed with dyslexia. Despite working with tutors and speech therapists and attending a specialized school, he still felt like the slowest learner in his class.
"The hardest part wasn't that he couldn't solve a problem or read a chapter without tears—it was that he believed he wasn't good enough," recalls Toby's mom, Arlyn Gadgilan.
That's when Arlyn decided to create a personalized AI assistant for her son. She uploaded his school results, specialist reports, educational programs, and Toby's personal interests into ChatGPT with a prompt: "You are a special education teacher experienced in teaching children with dyslexia. Help my son learn."
The AI turned boring tasks into games, responded to Toby in a way that matched his style, and tailored exercises so their difficulty gradually increased. Before long, teachers noticed progress: Toby became more confident, and challenging topics became easier for him to grasp.
👩💻 Arlyn realized she could help other children too. She studied hundreds of scientific papers on dyslexia and used vibe-coding to develop a platform called Tobey's Tutor. The app fully adapts to each student, explains lesson logic to parents, and responds to signs of anxiety in a child's behavior. The startup already has its first subscribers.
