🤷 Uber and Lyft Drivers in San Francisco Are Protesting against Waymo's Self-Driving Taxis
Labor unions are demanding regulators remove robotaxis from the streets until safety issues are resolved. The protesters' central argument: autonomous vehicles aren't held to the same strict standards as human drivers.
Surprisingly, 13 years ago, regular taxi drivers held similar protests—against Uber and Lyft. In 2013, they made almost identical complaints: ride-sharing services weren't covered by existing regulations, which allowed these "illegal" services (according to taxi drivers back then) to undercut prices and steal customers.
From 2026, it's already clear that Uber's victory over traditional taxis was inevitable—because people choose convenient and tech-savvy services. Both laws and taxi drivers themselves adapted to the new reality within a few years.
Now, history is repeating itself.
Are you for self-driving taxis or regular ones?
