🦕 AI Reads Dinosaur Footprints
The AI-powered tool DinoTracker analyzes photos of fossil tracks and predicts which dinosaur likely made them. Scientists from Edinburgh and Berlin trained the model on 2,000 real fossil footprints and millions of simulated examples.
The system distinguishes dinosaur footprints by several characteristics, including the distance between toes, heel position, ground contact area, and weight distribution across different parts of the foot.
The algorithm's predictions match the opinions of paleontology experts in 90% of cases, even for species that are considered controversial or difficult to identify.
DinoTracker has already helped researchers decipher unknown mysterious footprints dating back 170 million years, found on the Scottish island of Skye. It turns out that they could belong to the earliest relatives of duck-billed dinosaurs.
