❤️ Companion—a Thriller about the Romantic (and Potentially Toxic) Relationship between a Human and an Android
The debut project by American director Drew Hancock transports viewers to the near future. The main character, Josh, buys Iris, a robot designed to provide emotional support.
The female android has been trained to consider herself human and to satisfy her owner's every need, from everyday tasks to sexual favors. The robot's "user" can customize her eye color, choose her voice tone and language, and control her level of intelligence and aggression.
Josh, Iris's owner, however, has sinister plans: to kill his millionaire friend, who is connected to the Russian mafia, and take over his fortune. But at one point, Iris gets out of control.
🎥 The film boasts dynamic camera and some captivating retro aesthetics. For example, the scene where Iris and Josh meet for the first time, refers to the 1975 satirical horror film The Stepford Wives about submissive robot spouses. Other scenes are reminiscent of 2010s sci-fi dramas such as Spike Jonze's Her or Under the Skin.
💡 The movie creators explore human interaction with technology and the idea of machines' rebellion. But, as it turns out, the robots seem to be more human than humans themselves.
Will you watch it?
❤️ — Yes, sounds great!
🤔 — I'll look for something more romantic...
