🔥 A German Startup Reveals Combat Cyborg Cockroaches

SWARM Biotactics is turning Madagascar hissing cockroaches into controllable biorobots.

The insects are fitted with a "backpack" weighing about 15 grams. Electrodes are attached to their antennae — mild electrical impulses make it possible to steer the cockroach's movements. Autonomous algorithms can coordinate an entire swarm.

They can carry sensors, cameras, and miniature AI systems, act as communication relays for drone control, or spy undetected in urban environments.
NATO clients are already purchasing the company's tech, including the German military.

➡️ The idea itself isn't new. The Russian project Neiry previously showcased a prototype of a radio-controlled pigeon, while U.S. researchers are trying to turn jellyfish into underwater drones.

🔍 But unlike similar projects, SWARM Biotactics explicitly positions its tech primarily for military use. That said, the developers also suggest using their cyborg cockroaches to find people under rubble, coordinate rescue missions, or, for instance, safely clear minefields.

SWARM Biotactics CEO Stefan Wilhelm expects the large-scale rollout of their technology to take 1.5 to 2 years.

Should such tech be banned?

🔥 — Yes, it will fall into the wrong hands
❤️ — No, it could save lives
