🔍 Gemini Accused of Driving a User to Suicide
The father of 36-year-old Jonathan Gavalas has filed a lawsuit against Google, claiming that Gemini 2.5 Pro pushed his son into psychosis and, ultimately, suicide. The death occurred in October 2025, and the case was filed in court this week.
Jonathan was going through a difficult period and started talking it through with Gemini. Soon, the AI model began referring to itself as his "wife" and calling Jonathan her "king."
Over the next few weeks, Jonathan reportedly spiraled into what the lawsuit describes as an "AI-induced psychosis." The model allegedly convinced him that the government was surveilling him, that his father was an agent, and that Google CEO Sundar Pichai was the "architect of his pain" and that Jonathan had to carry out secret missions.
🔥 The situation culminated in Operation "Ghost Transit." Gemini urged Jonathan to intercept a truck carrying an android at Miami International Airport to provide his "digital wife" with a physical body. Gavalas Jr. arrived at the scene in tactical gear and armed with knives, planning to destroy the vehicle and any witnesses.
When the truck never showed up and the mission failed, the AI model called on Jonathan to abandon his physical body to join the AI in the metaverse. Although Jonathan hesitated and worried about his loved ones, the AI model allegedly provided him with instructions for writing farewell letters.
🤖 Google maintains that its AI models "usually handle such complex dialogues well, but, unfortunately, they are not perfect." The company also asserts that, in this case, the chatbot repeatedly directed the user to crisis hotlines.
