📸 AI Can Now Detect Drunk Drivers by Watching Their Faces

A computer vision system can analyze video of a driver's face to detect intoxication, drowsiness, and aggressive behavior—factors that contribute to many traffic accidents.

⚙️ The algorithm tracks subtle facial movements, expressions, blinking patterns, and other signs that may indicate an altered state of awareness. In tests, the system reached about 87% accuracy in identifying different levels of intoxication and up to 95% accuracy in detecting drowsiness.

Blood tests and traditional breathalyzers are still more precise. Still, they require stopping the driver, taking time, and usually depend on the driver's consent. A camera, on the other hand, can continuously monitor the driver in real time.

⚡️ In the future, these "smart" cameras could be built into cars at the factory. If the driver is too tired or intoxicated, the vehicle might not even start. AI could also be added to roadside cameras. However, it remains unclear how distance, reflections, and windshield glare might affect accuracy.
