💡 AI Helps Generate Creative Ideas, but Can Make Them Harder to Bring to Life
Researchers studied how AI affects the creative process. Design students ("experts") and peers from other fields were asked to create an advertising poster to attract tourists. Half worked on their own, while the others used AI as a tool.
Participants first had to brainstorm ideas, then chose the best one and turned it into a finished poster. The researchers tracked the number of ideas each person generated and the time it took to complete the task, while a panel of judges evaluated the final designs.
⚡️ During brainstorming, AI proved very helpful. It quickly suggested ideas people hadn't thought of on their own, and both beginners and experienced designers benefited from the collaboration.
But the picture changed during the execution stage. For students without design training, AI remained helpful. Experienced designers, however, often spent more time fixing and refining the AI-generated results.
According to the researchers, AI tools don't always fit smoothly into the workflows professionals have developed over years of practice. Designers also tend to notice more flaws in AI-generated work and don't see much improvement compared to what they can produce manually—unlike participants with little or no design experience.
🔍 That is why, to be truly useful, AI tools need to adapt to the user's style, technique, and habits, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach.
Do you use AI for creative work?
❤️ — Yes, it helps a lot
🔥 — No, I don't trust algorithms
