🤩 Organisms Without Brains or Sensation for Experiments and Organ Cultivation
The startup R3 Bio wants to grow complete human organisms without brains as a source of blood, tissues, and even organs for transplants.
In the future, these "bodyoids" could be much more effective than trying to "fix" the entire body, says Bojan Van, CEO of the Immortal Dragons fund, which has invested in the project.
"If it becomes possible to create a human body without a head or sensation, it could become a source of organs for transplants," Van explains.
🤩 According to the company, these organisms shouldn't have consciousness or the ability to feel pain, because the brain simply wouldn't develop.
For now, the company isn't revealing all the details of their technology, but it's known that they are studying the combination of stem cells and gene editing. So far, they are only working with monkey cells.
🤩 In addition, these biological systems could replace monkeys in labs for testing new medications. In theory, this could provide a more complete picture than using individual tissues or organs on chips, since here it's not just a single fragment of an organism, but an entire system of organs with vessels and tissue connections.
Is it ethical to create a human body without a brain?
❤️ — Yes, it's the future of medicine
🔥 — No, it's horrible
🤔 — It doesn’t matter if it saves lives
