📱 Is OpenAI Building Its Own AI Smartphone?
OpenAI is developing its own smartphone, with mass production reportedly planned for 2028, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most respected supply chain analysts in the tech industry.
He says OpenAI is developing custom mobile processors together with MediaTek and Qualcomm, while Luxshare would handle assembly and system design.
👨💻 A Smartphone Without Apps
Kuo predicts that the device will be built around an end-to-end AI agent. Instead of searching for the right icon, the user would simply give a task, and the AI would manage the services on its own. For example, the user says: "I need to be at the airport by 7:00 PM." The agent checks the calendar, flight, and traffic, orders a taxi, and tells the user when to leave.
According to the analyst, to make this experience work, OpenAI would need to become the architect not only of the hardware but also of its own operating system. That is the only way OpenAI could avoid depending on iOS and Android restrictions and give AI continuous access to the user's real-time context. Simple tasks would likely run locally on the device, while complex ones would be sent to the cloud.
💰 Kuo suggests that OpenAI could sell the device together with a subscription to its services. There are not even rough price estimates yet.
