Cenotes are vertical karst cavities formed during the collapse of the upper vaults of caves, a kind of natural wells filled with underground water.

There are more than 6 thousand cenotes on the Mexican part of the Yucatan Peninsula. 

Most Mexican cenotes are privately owned, and almost all of them are accessible to visitors only for a certain fee, which is set by their owners.
