Waves form when wind blows over the surface of the water. In the open ocean, the waves look like a series of hills.

When a wave approaches the shore, the bottom of the wave hits the bottom, and the movement of the wave slows down due to the force of friction, while the crest continues to move.

The wave narrows, becomes higher and falls on the shore.
