The Guérewol (also spelled Gerewol) is an annual courtship ritual competition among Niger’s Wodaabe Fula people. Young men in elaborate ornamentation and traditional face painting form lines to dance and sing for the attentions of marryable young women. The Guérewol is an annual event in which traditionally nomadic Wodaabe cattle herders gather at the southern edge of the Sahara before dispersing south on their dry season pastures.
