Bobtail squids (a.k.a. stubby squids) are cephalopods which are closely related to the cuttlefish. One of the most beautiful reef creatures you can meet during a night dive. They spent the night in midwater hunting their prey. And they have a symbiotic superpower. Inside their mantle live luminescent bacteria (the so called 'light organ'). In exchange for nutrition these microorganisms can make the silhoutte of the squid invisible from below. In a nutshell they are invisible for predators lurking on the ground.
Furthermore, bright diving lights usually trigger them to descent to the sandy ocean floor. After sitting there for some seconds they start to dig themselves into the sand. What an amazing creation of nature! 🥰
