Cookeina speciosa spreading its spores! How cool is this? 🍄

Mushroom spore dispersal is a fascinating process that involves two phases. The first is active ejection of spores, while the second is a passive phase where spores are carried by winds. However, new research suggests that the mushroom has control over the second phase too. By losing water vapor, the mushroom creates slow airflows that can carry spores out from under the cap and up to tens of centimeters into the air. This discovery sheds light on the intricate mechanisms behind mushroom spore dispersal.
