One of the most fascinating natural wonders are the glacial rivers in Iceland, and viewing them from above is an absolutely breathtaking experience.
The river networks in Iceland, originating from glaciers and flowing towards the sea, carry essential nutrients for the ecosystem in the form of sediment. As the river flow slows down, the sediment settles on the river bed and forms small, temporary islands made of dark volcanic sand, which cause the river channels to divide. These glacial river systems in Iceland are constantly changing as the sediment islands erode and the sediments relocate, forming new sand islands in response to changes in water speed and volume.
