Polar bears have extremely powerful noses with an exceptional sense of smell.
According to the Smithsonian National Zoo, their sense of smell is so strong they can smell a seal on the ice as much as 20 miles (32km) away, and can smell a seal’s breathing hole from half a mile away (800m).
A recent University of Alberta study concluded that, because bears rely on their nose and wind patterns to hunt seals, the climate crisis might greatly affect the bears’ ability to hunt due to its impact on crosswinds and shifts in wind speed.
