Several jellies in the genus Crossota occur in the depths of Monterey Bay. MBARI researchers have encountered this white jelly, Crossota alba, at depths of 2,000 to 3,200 meters (6,600 to 10,500 feet). Unlike its colorful cousin, Crossota millsae, this species has a pale white appearance and often reveals a rainbow shimmer when illuminated by the lights on ROVs or in the lab. These tiny jellies only grow up to four centimeters (1.5 inches) across.
