Brown bear cubs love to play. They’re full of energy and are fun to watch and photograph.
How do you tell the difference between a brown bear and a grizzly? All grizzlies are brown bears, but not all brown bears are grizzlies.
The grizzly is a North American subspecies of brown bear. Coastal bears in Canada and Alaska are generally referred to as brown bears, but inland and in the lower 48 US states they’re usually called grizzly bears.
Large male brown bears in Alaska often weigh more than 450 kilograms (1,000 pounds), but further south, in Yellowstone National Park, they weigh much less. No bear in Yellowstone has been found to weigh more than 400 kg (900 pounds).
In 1975, the US Endangered Species Act listed the brown bear as “threatened” in the lower 48 states.
Bear cubs are considered adults once they’re 5-6 years old. Until then, cubs like to play and explore their new world.
