Motherhood is hard work for all living things, but especially for bears. They must be able to protect their cubs from larger bears and other predators as well as feeding them -and themselves enough to survive hibernation. They need excellent habitat: access to vegetation, berries and protein sources and huge swaths of wilderness free of human development and roads.
