Spotted deer stand on their hind legs to reach leaves on branches when fresh growth is out of easy reach, especially during seasons when young leaves are abundant.

Many herbivores do this, allowing them to access nutrients that aren’t available at ground level. By stretching upward, they expand their diet beyond grasses and low shrubs, making the most of the forest like this one at Parambikkulam Tiger Reserve.
