Meerkats create safe spots called bolt holes across their foraging area to hide during emergencies. If caught in the open by a predator, a meerkat may try to appear intimidating by lying on its back and baring its teeth and claws. When confronted as a group, meerkats stand together, arch their backs, raise their fur, and hiss, often tricking the predator into believing they are a single large, aggressive animal.
