Look closely, and you’ll spot northern fur seal pups resting in a cove, hiding from hungry great white sharks, as they wait for their mothers to return from the sea to nurse. Taken at the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, off the coast of San Francisco, California, the Farallon Islands host one of only two fur seal rookeries south of Alaska. Pups are born in June-August and most are weaned by late November, when they head to sea on their own. Northern fur seals were exterminated from the Farallones in the early 19th century by seal hunters. They returned in 1996 after over 150 years of absence and have been increasing dramatically ever since.
