At this point in the season in Zambia, with water levels at their lowest, there’s a palpable tension brewing within the pods.
As space becomes more limited, the hippos grow agitated, constantly jostling and aggravating one another, adding fuel to the fire.
Eventually, the bulls reach their breaking point, and tempers flare, leading to volatile and violent confrontations.
For now, it’s mostly display behavior—showcasing their dangerous weapons—but it’s only a matter of time before big fights erupt, and the inevitable hippo carcasses follow on both land and in the water - drawing all sorts of predators to the scene.
