A barred owl was calmly preening when a squirrel suddenly darted into view, startling the bird. The owl quickly shifted from grooming to alertness, but the squirrel got away.

Owls have excellent long-distance vision, but they may not detect fast movements nearby until the last moment.

At normal speed, the encounter happens so quickly that it’s hard to even recognize the squirrel. The slowed replay turns a blink-and-miss moment into something remarkable.
