What really happens when a bison falls into a hot spring at Yellowstone?
Yellowstone National Park is home to the largest wild bison herd in the United States, with around 5,000–6,000 animals roaming freely. These giants, weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kg), often move across the same geothermal areas that fascinate millions of visitors every year.
The danger? The colorful ground around geysers and hot springs looks solid, but it’s often just a thin mineral crust covering boiling water. A step too close, and the weight of a bison can cause the surface to collapse.
🌡 Water temperatures: Many of these pools reach 90–100 °C (190–212 °F), close to boiling. Some are also extremely acidic, with a pH that accelerates decomposition.
