This little cutie is a Great Egret chick. Great Egrets, like so many other birds, were almost wiped out by greedy hunters. Now, hunters often get a bad rap because of the past but let's be clear, if there had not been a market for their plumage the slaughter would not have been as extreme. The fashion industry had an insatiable appetite for bird feathers and some ladies even wore entire birds on their hats! In other words, consumer preference can be a powerful factor in the well being of life on earth.
