The fluffy brown chicks seen here are king penguins in their downy coat, which they shed when they grow their adult plumage.
When European explorers first encountered them, they thought they were a different species and called them “woolly penguins” or “oakum boys.”
Around 40 days after hatching, chicks band together in groups called crèches for warmth and protection while both parents forage at sea. They take 14 to 16 months to fully fledge.
