Polar bears move ashore in hudson bay as sea ice melts in summer
Each summer, as sea ice melts across much of the Canadian Arctic, polar bears in regions such as Hudson Bay move ashore and fast because their primary seal prey become largely inaccessible until the ice returns.
With no true hibernation to fall back on, resting is one of their most effective strategies. On shore, they can lose around 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of body mass per day, so conserving energy is critical to surviving the ice‑free season.
