😱 Ray Kurzweil on How Our Consciousness Will Live Forever in the Cloud
Futurist and scientist, one of the authors of the Singularity theory, Ray Kurzweil, has expressed an optimistic view for all humanity: not only will people extend their lives through medical advancements, but they will also be able to transfer their consciousness to cloud services. Opinions on such predictions may vary, but Kurzweil's forecasts suspiciously often come true 🤔
🔝 Who is Ray Kurzweil?
American inventor, AI pioneer, AI development specialist at Google, futurist, and co-founder of the Singularity theory — these are all things said about Ray Kurzweil when trying to summarize his biography.
At 15, he created the first music recognition program — it not only worked like a modern Shazam but also created music in a specific style (hello, Suno!). And this was in 1963. A couple of years later, he founded his first company, which produced text-reading devices that became indispensable for visually impaired people. In 1982, Kurzweil created the first speech recognition systems, essentially becoming voice message's predecessors.
In the early 2000s, Kurzweil released one of the most provocative books of the decade — "The Singularity Is Near." In it, the inventor logically predicts that machines will reach superintelligence levels in the coming decades and that AI and humans will effectively merge.
💀 What Does Kurzweil Say About Immortality?
Biology has a lot of limitations. Many analysts feel there's nothing inevitable about dying, and we're coming up with things to stop it. Basically, we can get rid of death through aging. And there's no reason to stop at 120. There is no upper bound. Once we get past the singularity, we'll be able to put some AI connections inside our own brain. It’s not going to be literally inside the brain, it's going to connect to the cloud. The advantage of a cloud is it's completely backed up. <...> There are people working on this now, actually being able to put things inside the brain for people who can't communicate with their own bodies. It needs to be faster than it is today. And I believe that will happen by the 2030s.
Kurzweil's book "Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever" details digital immortality. It's worth noting that the inventor has repeatedly stated that he plans to live forever. In his latest interview, he added that he takes 80 types of pills daily to prolong his life. In one interview, Kurzweil mentioned that by the early 2030s, thanks to AI, people leading healthy lifestyles would start increasing their lifespan by 12 months each year.
😵 What Other Predictions by Kurzweil Have Come True?
⚫️ In 1990, Kurzweil predicted the emergence of a global information network where we would exchange information and communicate. By the mid-90s, the Internet had reached this level of development.
⚫️ In 1999, the scientist stated that AI would reach human-level intelligence (in terms of knowledge and application) within 30 years. Kurzweil now claims that he was not surprised by the emergence of modern LLMs.
⚫️ In his interview with Wired magazine, Kurzweil also named the ultimate deadline for the appearance of AGI — 2032. We have a little time left to wait and verify this prediction ⏱
