🦺 How to Protect Yourself from AI Scams

Artificial intelligence greatly streamlines work processes and boosts efficiency. However, it is increasingly being used by fraudsters. Fraud and extortion are becoming sophisticated. Scammers frequently target the elderly. Inform your grandparents, family, and friends about popular frauds and new safety precautions.

💬 Voice cloning of family and friends

A scammer obtains a sample of a family member's or friend's voice by recording a phone call or using footage shared on social media. Asking for aid is a popular technique. For example, a parent may receive a voicemail from an unknown number from their "son" informing them that their possessions had been stolen while traveling and asking for money.

What to do: Always confirm the validity of messages containing requests for money or personal information. Contact the sender via another messenger to confirm the legitimacy of the request.

📮 Personalized phishing and spam via email

Because personal data breaches occur often, most of it is public knowledge. Scammers may utilize information about recent locations, purchases, or habits.

What to do: As always, if you are unsure about the sender's authenticity, do not click or open anything. Show the email to someone else to get a second opinion.

😐 AI-generated deepfakes and blackmail

The newest form of fraud is using faces to create fake videos. For example, in January, an employee of a multinational company in Hong Kong transferred $25 million to scammers after speaking with "colleagues" who turned out to be deepfakes. The victim was invited to an online video chat to negotiate a confidential business arrangement, allegedly by the company's financial director.

What to do: Request that deepfake recordings be deleted from hosting platforms, or contact the platform administrators to have the scammers' accounts banned.
