🎶 Mysteries of the Mariana Trench: Scientists Decode the Sounds from the Deep

Spoiler: These are Bryde's whale calls.

A decade ago, while surveying the depths of the Mariana Trench, scientists captured strange, unexplained sounds. These “biotwangs,” as they came to be known, were a mix of low, moaning hums and sharp metallic pings. The source of these eerie noises remained a mystery for years.

🐋 Enter Google’s AI, now dubbed the “Shazam for whales.” Researchers sifted through over 200,000 hours of ocean recordings using advanced machine learning. This breakthrough allowed them to match the sounds to the migration patterns of Bryde’s whales. It turns out that the noises are most common in the northwest Pacific, though these elusive giants roam much further.

Bryde’s whales, massive baleen giants, spend their lives filtering krill and fish, but they’re rarely seen — constantly on the move and hard to track.
