👷 What Jobs Can ChatGPT Really Replace?

Researchers at Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, and New York University investigated which professions will most likely be replaced by large language models in the near future.

They examined 52 human skills common to most occupations (ranging from interpreting spoken language and producing texts to physical dexterity) and compared them to the capabilities of language models such as ChatGPT.

For each of the 774 professions, they assessed the degree to which the job relies on natural language processing skills. The stronger the reliance, the more probable the AI may affect the profession, perhaps leading to severe changes.

🚨 Professions most vulnerable to AI include telemarketers, foreign language teachers, social science instructors, political scientists, and psychologists.

A 2021 study, using a similar methodology but focusing on 10 distinct AI skills (including image generation and abstract problem solving), identified genetic counselors, financial advisors, mathematicians, and judges as "at-risk" professions.

🔨 Jobs requiring physical abilities and adaptability to dynamic environments, like masons, roofers, gardeners, and dancers, remain safe from chatbots for now.

The researchers also observed that the higher the mean salary in a profession, the more likely a chatbot could do the job.
