📱 OpenAI CPO Kevin Weil: On Robots, AI Agents, and Accelerating Progress
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil shared insights on when to expect a new OpenAI model, truly intelligent robots, and autonomous agents.
ℹ️ As the Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil oversees all OpenAI products. Previously, he developed commercial services at Instagram (launching the Stories format) and spent nearly seven years managing marketing and design at Twitter.
📈 Progress Is Accelerating
Over the past two years, the cost of AI models has decreased by 100 times while they have become smarter, faster, and safer—a combination of trends unmatched in any other industry.
The first reasoning model, o1-preview, achieved results in competitive programming equivalent to millions of people. The o1 model has already entered the top 1,000 globally, while o3 ranks 175th worldwide.
The official launch of o3 is scheduled for February-March. However, according to Weil, OpenAI is already training its next model.
🔼 ChatGPT Will Become More Than Just a Chatbot
Weil estimates that AI agents could handle about half of the tasks we currently perform in browsers (we recently covered OpenAI's smart assistant, Operator, in detail).
However, humans will remain in charge of the final decision. For example, an agent might fill a shopping cart in an online store, but the user will make the payment. Over time, even this boundary of necessary control over AI is expected to shift.
🤖 Who Will Create the First Truly Intelligent Robots?
OpenAI does not plan to release humanoid robots this year. According to Weil, AI still lacks an understanding of the physical world. At best, the first truly intelligent and autonomous robot could emerge in 2-3 years.
💡 What Sets Zuckerberg Apart From Altman?
Mark Zuckerberg is more structured than OpenAI CEO Sam Altman or Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, says Weil, who has worked with all of them. Mark always comes to meetings with hypotheses, has a "roadmap" in his head, and is always open to debates.
Sam Altman is a visionary. "That's why we're building a company that will spend $500 billion on AI infrastructure. Sam understands exponential growth better than anyone and knows what we need to do now to prepare for the future," explains Weil.
