🚼 AI Will Help Couples Conceive with IVF
According to WHO, one in six couples in the world struggle with infertility. IVF (in vitro fertilization) is today the most popular among the assisted reproductive technologies that can help couples conceive.
However, the procedure is expensive and does not always produce results, especially for patients over 35. Scientists from Imperial College London and the University of Glasgow developed a new method using AI tools that could significantly improve the success of IVF treatment.
🔍 How Does It Work?
The AI system analyzed data from more than 19,000 female patients between 18 and 49 who had completed IVF treatment between 2005 and 2023. The AI could identify which follicle size (small sacs in the ovaries containing eggs) sizes bring higher chances of fertilization and determine the best time to start the hormone shots during the IVF treatment. This can significantly increase the chances of successful embryo implanting and pregnancy.
🤰 The Prospects
The knowledge gained through AI could help doctors develop more effective and personalized IVF protocols. This approach can also be useful in other medical fields where many individual factors are at play and decisions need to be made quickly.
"Our study has shown that AI methods are well suited to analysing complex IVF data. In future, AI could be used to provide accurate recommendations to improve decision-making and aid in personalisation of treatment, so that we can give each couple the very best possible chance of having a baby," says Dr Ali Abbara, who co-authored the study.
