🤩 Yann LeCun: "AI Will Inevitably Develop Emotions"
Meta's Chief AI Scientist and Turing Award laureate Yann LeCun shared insights in a new interview about emotional AI systems, why the physical world is more complex than language, and the next stage in the evolution of AI models.
Highlights:
💬 Future AI systems will have emotions. According to LeCun, they will be able to understand the physical world, plan their actions, and inevitably develop basic emotions like fear or excitement. AI will also learn to experience "happiness" when achieving goals.
💬 "We shouldn't obsess over the question of consciousness," says LeCun. Consciousness still lacks a clear definition, but perhaps we're simply asking the wrong question—similar to how people once couldn't understand why we perceive the world normally despite the inverted image on our retina. Ultimately, the mystery lost significance—it depends on the brain's interpretation.
💬 The physical world is harder to model than language. Language is discrete and finite, whereas the physical world is continuous and unpredictable. We can predict the next word in a text, but it's impossible to foresee what a camera might capture during a sudden turn.
💬 Self-supervised learning is the key to AI progress. This paradigm allows a system to learn not for a specific task but by detecting inherent patterns in input data.
"So the way this is used for language, is that you take a piece of text, you corrupt it in some way by, for example, removing some words, and then you train a big neural net to predict the words that are missing," explains Yann LeCun.
💬 The main goal is to teach systems abstract thinking. An algorithm should understand what is depicted in a hidden part of an image as a human would imagine it rather than simply predicting pixel by pixel, as current AI models do.
