🔮 Your AI-generated Content is Just for You—and that's a good thing
AI makes it simple to generate images and videos in quantity and to any taste. As a result, social media is full of AI-generated content of varying quality.
But 99.99% of these creations are only interesting to their creators, says futurist and writer Kevin Kelly, co-founder of the iconic American tech magazine Wired, in a new podcast on the Every platform. And that, he argues, is exactly the point of the AI revolution in creativity: the purpose of AI-generated content is to bring joy to its creator first and foremost.
In the episode, Kelly discusses one of his experiments. He asked ChatGPT to expand on his old idea: what would happen if Leonardo da Vinci, Martin Luther, and Christopher Columbus met in person? He collaborated with the AI to create an entire world of historical personalities. The chatbot composed entire novels based on imaginary plots, designed covers for them, devised marketing plans, and even built individual wiki-style articles detailing the world.
Kelly explains that he enjoyed the process far more than the final product, and that's the true value of AI tools.
"People will be making feature length movies for themselves, and the pleasure will be in the generating of the movie. You'll be directing the movie for yourself and anyway. So that was a project I was using because the degree of historical realism and fantasy was mind-bending," he explains.
At the same time, Kelly admits that many of his predictions didn't come true. In the late 1980s, he was certain there would be a revolution in VR technology within a few decades—but while it has become cheaper, it still hasn't gone mainstream. He also encountered Bitcoin and blockchain early on but doubted the tech would ever be widely used in finance.
