🥇 AI Becomes World Champion in Drone Racing
In April, Abu Dhabi hosted the A2RL x DCL autonomous drone racing championship, where human pilots competed against AI-powered drones. 14 teams from various countries competed in the event. The winner was an AI created by the Micro Air Vehicle Lab from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
For the first time in such a tournament, AI outperformed humans, defeating three of the world's best drone racers. Two years ago, an AI drone from the University of Zurich had already outpaced humans, but only in a lab setting.
The drones had to complete a 170-meter track with 22 obstacles, relying only on a front-facing camera and motion sensors ⤴️ The AI operated the drone without any human input. During the race, the winning drone attained a speed of 95.8 km/h and finished the course in just 17 seconds.
