🥊 The First Robot Boxing Tournament Took Place in China

Hangzhou staged the first-ever boxing tournament featuring humanoid robots, with Unitree Robotics' G1 androids stepping into the ring.

Before the competition, engineers trained their robotic fighters in endurance, balance, and punching techniques. The biggest challenge was teaching the machines to act in real-time: dodging, attacking, and getting back up after being knocked down (arguably the most important skill).

In the ring, each robot was controlled by a team of operators. Still, AI algorithms played a key role in executing complex maneuvers. The robots delivered straight and side punches, kicked, and even performed spinning jump strikes.

There were also some humorous moments: occasionally, a robot would miss its opponent entirely, highlighting just how challenging it is to create a skilled mechanical fighter.

In the final round, the robot wearing a black helmet endured a series of attacks from its green-helmeted rival before delivering a counterstrike that knocked its opponent down (see the video ⤴️). Although the green fighter got back up and finished the round, the judges awarded victory to the black-helmeted robot.

However, the defeated fighter might get a chance for revenge—the next tournament is set to take place this December in Shenzhen.
