🔮 AI Apocalypse: Unlikely, Yet Not Entirely Impossible
Researchers at the Rand Corporation have assessed the risks of artificial intelligence completely destroying humanity. They conclude that even advanced AI systems are unlikely to be able to wipe out humans. But there are nuances.
➡️ Nuclear Armageddon is the least likely scenario. Even the explosion of all the warheads in the world would not cause a "nuclear winter" or radioactive contamination that would completely destroy humanity, according to the author of the study, Michael Vermeer.
➡️ AI is more likely to wipe us out with powerful biological weapons. However, even the creation and single use of a superweapon does not guarantee total extinction. To achieve this, AI would have to track down and destroy isolated groups of survivors over a long period.
➡️ Raising the temperature to 40-50°C across the entire planet using persistent greenhouse gases is possible theoretically and irreversible. However, this would require AI to have too much time and unlimited access to infrastructure.
🌿 But There Is Some Good News
The researchers clarify that a number of conditions are necessary for the most dire predictions to come true. First, AI systems must have a clear goal: to destroy humans. Second, AI must gain complete control over critical infrastructure and deceive people into helping it. This creates barriers that are too high for AI to overcome in reality.
"Will AI one day kill us all? It is not absurd to say that it could. At the same time, our work also showed that humans don't need AI's help to destroy ourselves," says Michael Vermeer.
Do you think an "AI apocalypse" is possible?
🔥 — Yes, it's possible
😎 — No, it's just scary stuff from some TV series!
