🇩🇰 Denmark to Grant Copyright Protection to Citizens' Appearance and Voice to Fight Deepfakes

Denmark may become the first European country where every person's appearance, body, and voice are protected by copyright. The government wants to curb the spread of deepfakes.

What Does the Bill Propose?

1️⃣ Appearance and voice will be automatically protected under copyright law.

2️⃣ Right to removal and compensation. If someone's appearance or voice is used without consent, they have the right to request the content be removed and can sue for damages in court.

3️⃣ Protection for artists and public figures. The law will also apply to performances generated by AI without the artist's permission. However, parody and satire will remain legal.

Denmark's Minister of Culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, says he's not willing to accept a world where "human beings can be run through the digital copy machine."

"Everybody has the right to their own body, their own voice and their own facial features, which is apparently not how the current law is protecting people against generative AI," the minister stated.

🔮 What's Next?

The law is expected to pass this fall, with around 90% of MPs backing the proposal. Platforms that fail to comply may face hefty fines.
