📺 AI "Reshoots" the Ending of a Cult Bollywood Drama
Raanjhanaa premiered in 2013 and quickly became a cult hit. Recently, Eros announced a a Tamil-dubbed version (Tamil is widely spoken in South India and Sri Lanka) and landed in hot water—the updated cut features an AI-generated ending.
The story follows the tragic love of Kundan, a Hindu, and Zoya, a Muslim. In the original finale, Kundan dies in Zoya's arms. In the re-release, Kundan survives.
Director Aanand L. Rai learned about the new ending from social media. He calls it a "reckless and dystopian experiment."
"To see its ending altered without a word of discussion is a gross violation not just of the film, but of the trust of the fans who've carried the film in their hearts for 12 years," Rai said.
Studio head Pradeep Dwivedi says the change is a "respectful reinterpretation." In its official statement, Eros Group even accuses the director of a PR stunt. Either way, the rights to the movie remain with the company.
What do you think, can films be changed like this?
🔥 — Sure, the original isn't gone
❤️ — No, that's disrespectful!
