🥶 A "Smart" Jacket That Cools You Down

Researchers at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics tackled the age-old problem of winter clothing: stand still and you're freezing, start moving and you're sweating. They developed a new jacket lining that adapts to your body in real-time.

Instead of using down, the team crafted membranes from bacterial cellulose—a natural, moisture-sensitive polymer produced by certain microbes.

When it's dry, the membrane curls up and thickens to 13 mm, puffing up the jacket to keep you warm. When you start sweating, it flattens out and shrinks to just 2 mm, letting heat escape and preventing overheating.

In tests, the material released heat 82.8% better than standard down insulation. The team conducted field trials with pedestrians and cyclists. Testing and computer modeling showed it could extend comfort in cold weather by 6–7.5 hours.

🏕 Who's It For?

This material could be a game-changer for workers who move between cold outdoors and warm indoors, such as couriers, police officers, sanitation workers, and EMTs. Athletes and winter adventurers could also benefit from smart temperature control.
