🍿 Weekend Watch: A New Documentary About Python

Python: The Documentary is not just a film about programming. It's an engaging chronicle of how a myth was born.

In the late 1980s in Amsterdam, a young programmer, Guido van Rossum, started writing a new language in his spare time. Many of its ideas came from the now-forgotten ABC language that Guido once worked on, and its name—Python—was inspired by his favorite show, Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Van Rossum wanted code to be simple, accessible, and… human. No one could have predicted that thirty years later this "side project" would become the world's most popular programming language—with the AI boom firmly securing its dominance.

Over the past three decades, Python has become a symbol of collaboration and openness—a whole culture with its own humor and philosophy ("Beautiful is better than ugly," "Simple is better than complex").

Alongside van Rossum, the film features other veterans of the team—Travis Oliphant, Barry Warsaw, and Tim Peters. They recount the early releases, failed commercial ventures, the painful transition from Python 2 to Python 3, and how the community managed to keep the language independent.
