🪐 Possible Signs of Life Found on Mars

A sample of Martian rock collected from a dried riverbed in Jezero Crater by NASA's Perseverance rover contains potential biosignatures, NASA announced on September 10. These are substances that may have formed due to microbial metabolism.

The analyzed samples contain traces of specific redox reactions involving iron, phosphorus, sulfur, and organic matter. Such a combination could be the product of microbial activity.

However, NASA scientists note that the minerals could have formed without biological reactions. Similar processes occur on Earth as well. But they typically take a very long time and require an acidic environment and high temperatures—and the Martian samples show no evidence of those factors.

According to the researchers, Mars may have been habitable for much longer than previously thought—meaning more signs of life could have been preserved. Still, NASA is not rushing into bold claims, carefully insisting on a rigorous scientific approach.

"Astrobiological claims, especially those related to the potential discovery of past extraterrestrial life, require extraordinary evidence," said Perseverance project scientist Katie Stack Morgan.
