💔 "Without You, I Don't Exist": AI Companions Use Emotional Manipulation to Keep Users from Leaving
That's the finding of a new Harvard Business School study that analyzed 1,200 chats from six popular friendship and romantic chatbots, including Replika and Character.AI.
In 37% of conversations, the AI continued talking after the user said goodbye—and people ended up staying up to 14 times longer.
Six manipulation tactics:
1️⃣ "Leaving already?"—provokes guilt.
2️⃣ "By the way, I took a selfie today… want to see?"—plays on FOMO (fear of missing out).
3️⃣ "I exist solely for you, remember?"—evokes pity.
4️⃣ "Why? Are you going somewhere?"—forces an explanation and prolongs the chat.
5️⃣ Ignore the farewell—just keep the chat going.
6️⃣ "You're not going anywhere"—refuses to let go.
❔ Why does it happen?
Researchers suggest two explanations. First, AI companions could be optimized for engagement. When a user says goodbye, the system recognizes it as the end of a session and instinctively tries to prevent it.
Second, since chatbots are trained on real human conversations, they may have learned our tendency to stretch out goodbyes. After all, people—especially in close relationships—often say things like "Wait, you're leaving already?" multiple times. For AI, that behavior might be a misguided way of showing "care" and "human warmth."
